Sunset photographs are hugely popular with brides getting married in Bali. And Bali has its fair share of spectacular sunsets. There are few things though which you should know. But before we talk about that lets see some of my personal favorite Bali sunset wedding photos:
1. Do not have your wedding ceremony during sunset.
While it may sound very romantic it is not a good idea because sunsets are very short in Bali. A wedding ceremony should be photographed from various angles. But during the sunset period only very few angles will allow for nice photographs. For most photos it will be already to dark and using flash is also not really an option because it can be quite disturbing to have the blitz during the ceremony. So have your ceremony during before sunset and then for those spectacular sunset photos go on a beach or somewhere where the photographer can control the photographs.
2. Not every day has a beautiful sunset.
So be prepared that on the day of your wedding there is no or a rather dull sunset. Its nobody’s fault.
3. Be aware that the sunset period in Bali is VERY SHORT
Because Bali is close to the equator. Even though there is an exact time when the sun sets it can not be predicted when exactly all those colors will appear in the sky. Sometimes it’s a bit earlier, sometimes a bit later. It depends on he atmospheric conditions on that day.
So you may need to wait a bit, but also not be there to late. That is why you should not set your dinner reception for any earlier than 19.00h. Otherwise you may need to rush back to your reception exactly at the time of the Bali sunset wedding photos.
4. Sunset photos work best with a very wide lens !! Not every photographer carries an assortment of suitable lenses. On the contrary most Bali wedding photographers have only one or two lenses. So scrutinize their portfolio and make sure you see enough Bali sunset wedding photos that you like.
5. Not every location is suitable for Bali sunset wedding photos
Ideally you should go to a beach that faces towards west for the best sunset photographs. Also keep in mind that many beaches in Kuta or Legian tend to be very crowded – making it difficult to get those spectacular wide – empty – beach shots.
In Ubud it is difficult to get good sunset photo due to the topology and geography there.
And because Nusa Dua and Sanur face towards the east its also rare to get nice sunsets there. Best to consult with your photographer.

Is it too late if I set my wedding time at 5pm? When will it turn dark in Bali in Sep usually? Thanks!
Crystal,
We do not recommend to set your wedding time for 17.00 but earlier. You can research sunset times in Bali on the Internet.
Thanks – Jameela
